Transformations

On December 11th and 12th EarthLinks held its annual Holiday Open House and sale. Just days before, our facility was its usual hub of activity. Everyone was busy preparing breakfast and then settling into workshop, fashioning our line of Earth friendly products from the garden harvest and re-purposed materials. On Open House day, the building had been transformed into a glittering holiday market showcasing our handmade inventory. Stacks of fragrant skin products; bat and bee boxes; jars of golden honey; candles, vases, flower bowls and cards; hand warmers; gourd bird houses; dog coats and...

We Truly Are Family

As many of you know, it is common for participants at EarthLinks (all of whom are homeless or have experienced homelessness in the past) to name EarthLinks as one of their families.  For some participants, they clearly explain that EarthLinks is their only family.  This was the case for Ronnie. Two nights before Thanksgiving, I was one of six EarthLinks staff members standing in a circle surrounding Ronnie in his hospital room as he took his last breath.  Ronnie had been sleeping outside on and off for many years and has been a part of the EarthLinks family for the last four. He helped us...

Farmer’s Market

It was a quiet Friday afternoon when Tyler, the faithful participant who scours our offices twice a week, brought a couple of strangers into the building. Even though all our gates were closed, the policy here when we’re short staffed, they had caught Tyler’s attention and he let them in. They were hoping to purchase some produce from the garden, he explained. This fall we’ve been excited to begin selling our produce to neighbors and passers–by, and have been encouraged by the positive response. Other afternoons that week some of my coworkers had been outside advertising our wares, but today...

Swarm Season

As we move into summer we are coming to the end of the bee swarm season. This is a very exciting time of year at EarthLinks. Swarm season refers to a period of time that usually lasts a few weeks during mid-spring. During this time, strong, healthy beehives have a tendency to produce a second queen and eventually a large portion of the hive will suddenly depart with the additional queen to start a new hive at a new location. If you have never seen a swarm of bees before, the first time can be a frightening experience. When a honey bee swarm emerges from their hive the sheer number of...

Best Picture

The Best Picture! By Cass Cronan, Executive Director   As we head towards the Oscars again this year, there is always lots of ‘buzz’ around which picture will win the best picture award.  Well, I have the answer – the best picture is the picture on this blog!  This represents one success story where our friend “Pete” has finally found his way from the street to an apartment! It really does take a village – a community – to solve the problems of individuals facing homelessness in our community. We all have a stereotype of who ends up on the street – it’s the addict, the criminal, those...
